Services for special needs

what are psycho-educational programs?

While some parents call these sessions “counselling for kids” or services from a “child counsellor”, the structured programs used in sessions with Julie Lewis Counselling and Consulting are considered educational in nature. They are teaching tools.

The term psycho-education refers to training or education about certain situations or conditions that cause mental, or psychological stress for the student or others around them.

The programs used in these sessions are called evidence-based. In other words, through very detailed research, their effectiveness has been scientifically proven. That is, they work!

For school-aged children and teens, this training is most often used for those with special learning needs, and / or those with diagnosed conditions such as Autism / Asperger Syndrome, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or other conduct disorders.

However, children who don’t receive special education at school also benefit from learning new skills to help them make and keep friends, control emotional outbursts, and build a good sense of self esteem.

The overall goals for psycho-education programs are for the student to understand and be better able to deal with the presented social and/or emotional problems through learning new skills and problem-solving techniques.

Not only does the student benefit with new skills for life, their families and schools do as well.

The parent toolkit assists families to extend the learned skills to the home, and the school.

Here at Julie Lewis Counselling and Consulting, insurance receipts are not available for psycho-educational programs.
