Children's Anxiety Program, Level Two

The Anxiety Level Two Program continues on with the skills learned in the initial anxiety program as well as teaching new, more advanced skills. Cognitive Behavior Therapy strategies are used at the advanced level as well. CBT helps children learn to handle their fears and worries by modifying the ways they think and behave. Techniques included in CBT are relaxation, positive self-talk, and coping behaviors. The recommended treatment approach for anxiety is overwhelmingly CBT.

Children will learn:

Physiological principles:

  • How to recognize what happens physically to their body when they become anxious.
  • How to relax and calm themselves down during an anxiety provoking situation

Cognitive Skills:

  • How to change their negative self talk into positive, hopeful self talk.
  • How to reward themselves when they achieve a partial success.

Learning Skills:

  • How to problem solve using a six stage model to solving problems
  • How to gradually expose themselves to anxiety provoking situations using a coping step plan.
  • How to reward themselves for approaching worrisome situations.

The program has a clinical game-based presentation with direct skill instruction and suggestions for between-session practice. A pre and post program screening is completed to chart progress and provide appropriate recommendations for further support. This program can be incorporated into families and home behaviour plans and school Individual Education Plans. (IEP)
