Parent Effectiveness Training (P.E.T.)
Parent Effectiveness training is a proven method I use to teach some skills in managing child behaviour to you, the parents. This approach emphasizes positive, encouraging interactions with your child, and carefully planned rules, beginning in the home.
The P.E.T. approach was first created for children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and/or Oppositional Defiant Disorder (O.D.D). It has also proven very helpful for children who have not been diagnosed with these behaviour challenges.
Parent Training: Behaviour Management of Children (Age 3-12 years)
Topics covered in these parent training sessions include:
- Why children misbehave
- How to change child behaviour by changing the way you interact with your children
- How to create a Behaviour Plan, and practice doing it
- How to encourage your child to follow the rules, in public, and at school
The best results occur when parents attend all sessions, and do all the homework.
Parent Training for Behaviour Management for Teens (Age 13-18 years)
For this age group, two types of sessions are given:
First, Sessions with Parents where we discuss:
- Why do teens misbehave?
- How parents actions’ and “no action” affect teen’s behaviour
- Designing a behaviour contract including
- How to pay positive attention to the teen,
- Rewards and how the teen earns them
- Suitable use of “grounding”
- How to support your child at school as part of the home contract
Second, Sessions with Parents & Teen
When parents have learned the new parenting skills, I offer combined parent and teen sessions, where we discuss and practice together
- How to tackle problems together
- How to talk to each other effectively so we all understand each other
- How realistic are our expectations, and how to fix unreasonable ones
Often it is helpful when I “model” how to act and talk for parents and teens to learn new ways of doing it.
