Eating disorders

Eating disorders are about feelings, not food.
Whether in adults, teens or children, using food as a way of managing feelings

  • becomes tiring
  • can be frightening,
  • compromises physical health, and
  • proves ineffective over time.

These ineffective coping attempts can become compulsive and spin out of control, eventually using up much of the time in life that would otherwise be devoted to enjoying oneself.

The first step in overcoming an eating disorder is to begin to understand how “eating because of” a feeling (binging) , “throwing up” a feeling (purging), or “denying feelings” (starving, exercise anorexia) do little to resolve those same feelings.

Treatment plans focus upon CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), and supportive Counselling and interpersonal coping skills while addressing issues related tothe addictive nature of eating disorders, family systems issues, communication style, stress management, body image, and self-esteem. Relapse tolerance and relapse prevention are addressed.

Weekly or daily session schedules are available.

Daily sessions for eating disorders

These are designed for eating disorders clients seeking an alternative to inpatient care at Homewood or a similar residential facility.
Clients accepted for this type of service must be medically stable (adequate body weight, compliant with eating programs), followed by their doctor and/or psychiatrist while in treatment, emotionally motivated, and financially able to fund treatment.

Clients benefiting from this form of treatment are those who wish to remain in their daily lives, in the local community, while in recovery for their eating disorder.

Individualized treatment plans focus on CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), supportive Counselling and interpersonal coping skills while addressing issues related to the addictive nature of eating disorders, family systems issues, communication style, stress management, body image and self-esteem. Relapse tolerance and prevention are addressed.
