Depression
Some statistics:
An estimated one million Canadians suffer from some form of depression. The Canadian Mental Health Association reports one in 10 people will suffer from depression during their lifetime. World Health Organization says depression will be the second-leading cause of disability in the world by 2020, trailing heart disease. These facts reveal not only the frequency but also the cost of depression.
We support our clients by helping them understand
- what depression is,
- how it works and
- how to over come depression.
Supportive counselling, stress management, and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) approaches are among the customized strategies we use to get people back to their lives, jobs and families.
Post-Partum Depression
Having a baby is a big event for all mothers; physically and emotionally. It is natural in the first few days after delivery for women to experience mood fluctuations as their hormones realign. These feelings of the “baby blues” are often gone within the 10 days after delivery. However, some women experience deep, painful, long lasting depression which is known as post-partum depression. These Moms often feel like bad mothers, some find it hard to connect emotionally with their babies, and they often find it hard to seek help.
Post-partum depression has not always been recognized as a real concern; hence it continues to be under-reported. Research shows that the sooner the condition is diagnosed, the more effective the treatment.
We offer supportive counselling, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), stress management and communication strategies to help Moms reduce the impact of, and work through their post-partum depression.
Post-Partum Prevention : Women who have already experienced a first post-partum depression, are often more able to feel depression creeping in earlier in their second pregnancy. Coming for counselling early, is a positive intervention to prevent a second post-partum. These sessions focus on lifestyle balance, CBT, stress management and self-care strategies.
New fathers can suffer from depression too. At a time when the spotlight is on the new mother and child, some men need support for depression. Their depression can be related to sleep deprivation and exhaustion.Sometimes, husbands who have supported their wives through one post partum depression, become discouraged when anticipating a return of their spouses’ symptoms if and/or when another child is born.
These sessions make space for Dads’ to explore their own needs, concerns and thought processes through supportive counselling, CBT, stress management and lifestyle balance strategies customized for men.
